OFFICIAL INFO:
1) What It's LikeA municipal beach park near downtown St.Pete that has lots and lots of interesting people and unusual numbers of shore birds when they aren't being scared off by too many of those people. 2) Kinds of BirdsShore birds - we've seen a lot of the not so every day ones here. Also parrots frequent the trees in the parks next to the beach. Just listen for them. 3) WildlifeIt's very urban but there is interesting sea life close by. At least a few years ago - just next door at the Vinoy park most days near dusk you'd see dolphins swimming by at top speed corralling fish to hunt along the sea wall. I've also seen manatee along here a couple times. It's odd to be at a concert here while watching this go on. 4) AmenitiesBathrooms, water fountains, tennis courts, volleyball, field for all kinds of activities - it's a very active park on weekends and after work. I don't know why but this is THE bathroom I think of when I imagine clandestine sexual weirdness like glory holes. No idea what it is that gives me that vibe. As far as I know it's 100% safe. (shudder!) 5) DirectionsIt's north of the big public pool and Vinnoy park. It's kind of long but the end closest to downtown is where most things happen including the birds. 6) Time RequirementsYou could spend 5 minutes. Unless watching dolphins I'd think you'd get bored within 20 minutes. ExperienceAs I said it's a very active beach. All kinds of things are going on here all the time like yoga classes, kites, all kinds of random people of all kinds on the sidewalks here and next door at Vinoy park. So it's a pleasant cultural experience that often catches you off guard in a good way. The shorebirds can be hit or miss but if I think of where I've seen the most exciting mixed flocks of shorebirds I think here and probably along the highway at Ben T. Davis Beach - both in Tampa. |
